I make it a habit to do so (learned from a manual trans vehicle)

and it's good to do it on an automatic as well... or it'll seize up from lack of usesome people had broken mounts (engine and trans) because they put the weight of the vehicle on the transmission parking pawl

wife's acura mdx is notorious for this problem if not used... (on mdx.org or some site it's confirmed)

in a ford explorer, brother's vehicle's column shifter became soo "loose" that you have to put it in "N" to start the vehicle!

pulled the pan off, checked the pawl and it was BENT! (confirmed that others had this problem on the ford explorer forums)

other brother never used it before and when he did, they locked up the rear wheels! yay! $300 for new set of rear brake calipers with integrated parking brake mechanisms fixed that problem
------------------------------------------------------------

i make it a priority to inform my family and friends to use the brake everytime... drive up to your spot, engage the parking brake, and then shift to park

it'll save headaches and $ in the long run

I usually have no reason to use the parking brake when I am in or around the Chicago area.

Occasionally though, I will do so in a parking structure.

I have family attending SIU in Carbondale and when I visit there I find myself using the parking brake more often.

Carbondale itself is fairly flat, but some of the outlying communities, especially to the south and west, are a bit more hilly.

You should use it at lease 4 to 6 time a year to keep it from locking up.

well, i've seen a co-worker forgetting to shift the vehicle to park & went out to deliver the package; it started rolling away!

good thing i have a habit of engaging it at every stop; eventhough i have to do it ~100 times per day
